Lambi on the island of Kos |
Lambi ( Greek Λάμπη ( f. Sg. )) Is a settlement on the Greek island of Kos , which is on the northeastern tip of the island, near Cape Ammoudia. Cape Ammoudia (also called Cape Skandari) in turn forms the north-eastern part of the Gulf of Kos .
Location, geography, traffic
Lambi is about 1.5 kilometers as the crow flies north of the city of Kos at about 0 to 6 meters above sea level. Lambi is well connected to Kos by bus lines.
history
On maps of the British Admiralty from the 19th century numerous windmills are drawn or mentioned in the area of Lambi. The place Lambi was founded in 1936 as a model rural settlement of the Italian occupying power on the island of Kos for Italian settlers. This model settlement was first called Torre di Lambi . In addition to Lambi, the second settlement on Kos was the village of Anguillara , today's Linopotis . These model settlements were a long-term planned measure as part of the agro-cultural colonization propagated by the Italian fascists (see also: Italian Aegean Islands 1912–1943). The creation of such rural settlements on Kos and other islands, as well as in Italy, was also used as an employment measure for the unemployed between 1928 and 1934.
Population and political structure and sights
Lambi is now a suburb of the city of Kos (Κως), which has a total of 19,432 inhabitants (2011). The Lambi Beach (public beach, also called Alikarnassos ) is known, which stretches from the port of Mandraki in the city of Kos to Cape Ammoudia and from there towards Tigaki . Due to its quick accessibility, Lambi Beach is popular with locals and tourists alike, with beach life becoming increasingly quiet in the direction of Cap Ammoudia.
