Agios Pavlos in Linopotis

The Church of Agios Pavlos ( Greek Αγίος Παυλος Agios Pavlos , German 'Sankt Paul' , also Αγιος Παυλος Λινοποτις ) is located in Linopotis ( Λινοπότης ( m. Sg. )) On the Greek island of Kos . It is dedicated to Paul of Tarsus . Its patronage is celebrated on June 29th every year. The apostle Paul is considered to be the founder of the Christian Church on Kos, as he is said to have traveled from Kos on his return journey to Jerusalem .

The church belongs to the Orthodox Metropolitan of Kos and Nisyros , which in turn reports directly to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel ( Greek Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Oikoumenikó Patriarcheío Konstantinoupoleos , Turkish İstanbul Rum Ortodoks Patrikhanesi , even Church of Constantinople Opel ) is a subordinate.

location

The church is located on the western edge of the village of Linopotis, northwest opposite the historical administrative center Linopoti on an area of around 5000 m² about 20 meters above sea level. The property is easily accessible from the main road Kos - Kefalos, which runs south, via a 100 meter long cul-de-sac.

History and buildings

The church building was erected as a Roman Catholic church in the 1930s together with the Linopoti Historical Administrative Center by the Italian occupying forces . The island of Kos was occupied by Italy from 1912 to 1943 , which ended the 400-year rule of the Ottoman Empire over Kos and the very extensive self-government of the island.

Because the church was built as a Roman Catholic church, the altar faces west and not east, as is common in Orthodox churches.

The church was renovated and is now surrounded by a well-tended garden with flowers, citrus trees and many olive trees (as of December 2019).
