He was Dr. med. hc from the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . From 1887 to 1890 he was chamberlain, cabinet secretary of the Empress Augusta , from 1890 he was vice-chief master of ceremonies of the Empress Auguste Viktoria .

He commented on the appointment of Clovis zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst as Chancellor on October 29, 1894 in a letter to his son, the politician Alexander zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst :

“The k [aiser] does not know the scope of the current situation because he does not yet understand the extent of his own guilt for it. Only this knowledge, however, will give the Prince [Hohenlohe] a bearable situation ... The time when the Prince is at the head of the business must become a school for the Emperor, otherwise the situation will remain untenable. For if all the other factors change, the emperor remains, and the unpredictable must be removed from this remaining factor. I would still like to assume that it is time for this and, given such a high level of talent, possibility. But here lies a core of the problem. "
