Mto wa Mbu is a small town in Tanzania in the Great Rift Valley at the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park about 90 km northwest of Arusha and has a population of just under 20,000 (2007 estimate), most recently officially 16,068 (2002 census).

population

The place lies at the intersection of the African population movements, so that members of almost all (about 120) peoples of Tanzania should be here. What is certain is that all four pan-African language families: Bantu , Nilotic , Kushitic and Khoisan are represented in the town and the immediate vicinity among the resident population. This is unique to the whole continent. In addition, there is the influx of people from all over the country due to the lively tourism.

meaning

The place was originally a small fishing settlement on Lake Manyara . The name means "river of mosquitoes " in Swahili and thus describes the abundance of water with the mosquitoes that occur strongly depending on the season. With the establishment of the national park, the development of a market town began; the market, which is held every day, supplies the population of a wide area. The - meanwhile asphalted - main road from Arusha to Karatu and on to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti runs through the place, which means that all tourists pass it on their safaris . Numerous hotels of all price ranges, several campsites and souvenir shops have therefore settled, which are now the most important employers. There are several daily bus connections to Arusha.
