Hospital in Karatu

history

The place represents the center of an intensively agriculturally used region. The year-round rainfall on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro crater massif and the altitude (Karatu town at 1534 m above sea level) offer ideal growing conditions for coffee , bananas and vegetables . The authorities of German East Africa recognized this and encouraged the settlement of German farmers here towards the end of the 19th century.

The Leipziger Missionswerk has been active in Tanzania since 1893, the Lutheran Hospital in Karatu was a hospital built by this missionary organization. It has been supported by the Bayreuth Dean's Office since 1986, and the Bad Berneck Dean's Office joined in 2000. The hospital is recognized by the government as a district hospital.

Karatu is the end of the paved main road from Arusha and the last stop before the large national parks of the Tanzanian north. It has therefore been nicknamed the Safari Junction by tourists . There are several hotels and campsites, as well as shopping for groceries and souvenirs. It is connected to the district capital Arusha by several intercity buses every day.

The athlete Filbert Bayi was born in Karatu.
