Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan (Arabic: محمد بن زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان, full name Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed bin Khalifa bin Shakhbout bin Theyab bin Issa bin Nahyan bin Falah bin Yas, born on March 11, 1961 ) is Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates .

Life and education

He is the third son of Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan , the first President of the United Arab Emirates; his third wife is Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi.

He went through training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , which he graduated in 1979.

Mohamed bin Zayed served as an officer in the Amiri Guard, as a pilot in the Air Force, as Commander of the Air Force and Air Defense, and as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates.

After the death of his father, Mohamed bin Zayed became Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in November 2004. Since December 2004 he has also been President of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi and responsible for development planning and the development of the United Arab Emirates. In 2005 he was appointed Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates and promoted to Lieutenant General.

Mohamed bin Zayed is Vice President of the Petroleum Council of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. This company is responsible for managing Abu Dhabi's hydrocarbon resources.

He is President of the Mubadala Development Company. Since 2002, this company has been the main global investor for the Abu Dhabi government.

He is also chairman of the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED), one of the most important institutions for economic planning in the state. Under his leadership, ADCED promoted various initiatives to support private entrepreneurs from the United Arab Emirates.

Mohamed bin Zayed is also Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), an investment fund for Abu Dhabi residents that aims to multiply and globalize the economy.

Mohamed bin Zayed has been married to Salama bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan since 1981. They have four sons and five daughters.

Education and innovation initiatives

Mohamed bin Zayed is Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Education Council, which was founded in 2005 with the aim of developing and implementing strategies to improve the public and private education systems. He is also President of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR).

He sponsored events such as the National Science, Technology and Innovation Festival and founded the International Robotics Challenge to create a regional center for research in robotics and autonomous systems in the UAE .

In 2008, the first group of students in the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Education Program was selected as part of an initiative with New York University Abu Dhabi to recognize outstanding students in the United Arab Emirates and provide them with special academic and leadership opportunities.

Charitable institutions

He heads the Mohamed bin Zayed species protection fund, a philanthropic foundation with 25 million euros that provides grants for species protection initiatives worldwide. The spiny-tailed iguana species Enyalioides binzayedi was named after Mohamed bin Zayed after the fund provided financial support for the expeditions that led to the discovery of the species in the Cordillera Azul National Park in Peru.

Mohamed bin Zayed and the Gates Foundation each pledged $ 50 million in 2008 to finance the purchase and delivery of vaccines for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A $ 30 million donation went to the Roll Back Malaria Partnership to Fight Malaria. A month after the donation was announced, Abu Dhabi hosted a global health forum focused on efforts to eradicate diseases such as malaria , polio and river blindness . He also donated AED 55 million to the UN Global Anti-Trafficking Initiative.

The Zayed Charity Marathon, which takes place in New York City, has raised millions of dollars since it opened in 2005. The race raises awareness of kidney disease, with the proceeds going to the US National Kidney Foundation. Mohamed bin Zayed initiated the event in honor of his father, who received a kidney transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in 2000.

In 2017 bin Zayid launched the Reaching Last Mile Fund to combat preventable diseases such as river blindness, lymphatic filariasis , polio, malaria and guinea worm disease, which particularly affect poorer people in the world. He provided $ 20 million for the fund.

In 2019 the Zayed Global Fund for Coexistence was established.

Mohamed bin Zayed supported the construction of art museums - including the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - as well as cultural heritage sites such as Qasr Al Hosn.
