Muhammad ibn ʿUmar at-Tūnisī
Muhammad ibn ʿUmar at-Tūnisī ( Arabic محمد بن عمر التونسي, DMG Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar at-Tūnisī ), in English for short Sheikh Mohammed of Tunis (* 1789 ; † 1857 ), was an Arab merchant from Tunis . He is the author of a travelogue about his trip to East Africa in the area of Darfur and Wadaï (1804-1814), which was first published in French by Nicolas Perron ( Voyage au Darfur , Paris 1845 & Voyage au Ouadây , Paris 1851) and in 1854 in one abridged version translated into English by Bayle St. John under the title Travels of an Arab merchant in Soudan (The Black Kingdoms of Central Africa) in London (1854).
