Life

Otto Hettner was the son of the literary historian Hermann Julius Theodor Hettner (1821–1882) and Anna (1838–1897), the eldest daughter of August Grahl .

In 1897 he brokered the sale of graphic works by Edvard Munch through the Ernst Arnold Gallery in Dresden , whose Paris studio he was in charge of during Munch's absence in 1903 and 1904. During this time, Hettner studied with Robert Poetzelberger at the Karlsruhe Art School and at the Académie Julian in Paris.

From 1904 to 1911 Hettner lived in Florence, where Jeanne Alexandrine Thibert (1878–1958) gave birth to his son Roland Hettner (1905–1978) on October 26, 1905 , who would later also work as a graphic artist. In 1907, in May, he married the Frenchwoman Jeanne Thibert (1878-1958) in London. Shortly afterwards his daughter Sabine Hettner was born.

Hettner returned to Dresden with his family in 1913 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts . In 1916 he was on the board of directors of the Free Secession , in the following year he became head of the act room of the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was professor and temporarily president from 1918 to 1927.

For respected publishers of the time, such as B. the Avalun-Verlag, the Marees-Gesellschaft and the Pan-Presse, Hettner illustrated various press prints . Among the works he provided with lithographs are Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Florindo and the Galatea von Cervantes , which appeared as Avalun prints, as well as Heinrich von Kleist's Das Erdbeben in Chili , which was published as the 13th publication in the Pan-Presse .
