Press printing
Press prints are in the traditional high-pressure process manually mostly in small series produced books of high quality. They are printed on mechanical hand presses (toggle presses, pressure presses), in rare cases also using the hand rubbing method.
For the typography , lead type is predominantly used, occasionally wood type. These are mainly used with large font sizes, where the lead type would be too heavy. If press prints contain images, these are predominantly printed using original graphic techniques: letterpress (e.g. woodcut), gravure (e.g. etching ) and flat printing (e.g. lithography ). The papers are often of high quality, also hand-made or have other special properties (e.g. wrapping paper in individual cases). Press prints are often handcrafted in small manual binders. The small editions are often signed by the author or artist. Often there are also specially equipped, more expensive special editions, for example with a more elaborate cover, noble paper, additional graphics or together in a slipcase.
Press prints are sold as collector's items and are rarely offered in bookstores. The Mainz mini press fair is an important marketing tool in German-speaking countries .
