Wolfgang Tiessen

Wolfgang Tiessen (born January 1, 1930 in Königsberg ; † October 26, 2017 ) was a German book designer and publisher and the editor of Edition Tiessen in Neu-Isenburg .

Life

After attending grammar schools in Königsberg, Berlin and Detmold, Tiessen met the book designer Gotthard de Beauclair in Detmold in 1947 . From 1949 to 1951 he trained as a typesetter with Scherpe in Krefeld . In 1952 he was typesetter in the in-house printer of the type foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main and from 1953 to 1960 he worked for de Beauclair for Insel-Verlag , D. Stempel and their Trajanus press .

In 1960 he was responsible for the book-making side of Insel-Verlag for one and a half years during the time when de Beauclair was its publishing director. In 1962 the mail order bookshop “Wolfgang Tiessen. Modern book art and graphics ”. Their catalog “Circular Letter for Friends of Modern Book Art and Graphics” appeared in a total of 36 issues. In 1963 he married Gisela Schwarz van Berk. In 1968 the bookstore moved to Neu-Isenburg; the first volumes of "The book illustration in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since 1945" appeared in the same year. Another four volumes followed, the last one in 1989. The first books of Edition Tiessen appeared in 1977, which, like all the following, were set by hand by the publisher from the original Janson Antiqua. In 1987 a last circular was published, the work now remained concentrated on the publisher. In 1995 the 80th and last print of Edition Tiessen was published. In 2007, the publishing archive was handed over to the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel. Wolfgang Tiessen lived in Neu-Isenburg.
