Christian Heinrich Kleukens (born March 7, 1880 in Achim near Bremen ; † April 7, 1954 in Darmstadt ) was a German printer , typographer and teacher .

life and work

Christian Heinrich Kleukens experienced his youth in Hemelingen and Bremen. He was trained by his brother Friedrich Wilhelm in the Steglitz workshop and attended the Academy for Graphic Arts in Leipzig . From 1907, again under the direction of his brother, he worked as a printer in the newly founded private printing works of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse , the Ernst Ludwig Press in Darmstadt, which he took over in 1914. In 1911 he built the first residential building in what would later become a villa colony in Trautheim . In 1913 he became a member of the artists' colony on Mathildenhöhe . In 1919 he founded the Kleukens press with Rudolf G. Binding .

In 1919 he founded the Kleukens bindery in Darmstadt. Ernst Rehbein , who moved from Leipzig in 1922 , became its director . Up to this time, the volumes to be bound were transported back and forth between Leipzig and Darmstadt.

In 1927 he took over the management of the newly founded Mainz press and became a lecturer at the State School for Arts and Crafts in Mainz .

With a total of over 300 printed works, Ch. H. Kleukens is probably the most productive printer of the German book art movement and enjoyed international recognition. The Ernst Ludwig Press alone produced 93 works; In the Mainz press , which had dedicated itself to the typographically perfect, cheap book, 65 printed works appeared in 10 years, all of which were printed in fonts specially designed by Kleukens for the press. In addition to his work as a type designer and printer, he was also active in literature. His first printed work was already a collection of fables that he had written himself. His dramas SOS (1931) and Der bankrotte Jona (1932) also attracted attention .

Christian Heinrich Kleukens had been married to Luise, born Krüger (1889–1968), since 1912, the younger sister of the painter Friederike de Beauclair .
