from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muirchertach mac Erca [ 'murʴçertax mak' erka ], also Muirchertach mac Muiredaig , is the name of a historical / mythical high king in Celtic mythology of Ireland from the 6th century. He is briefly mentioned in the Foras feasa ar Éirinn ("History of Ireland"). According to uncertain, sometimes legendary traditions, he was the son of Muiredach from the family of Uí Néill and Erc, daughter of Lodans, King of Alba (Scotland) .

Later he became the main character of several legends, of which Aided Muirchertaig meic Erca ("The death of Muirchertach, the son of Ercs") is the best known. His adultery with the sorceress Sín and his death in flames as punishment are the content of this story.
