Mucosal block

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A mucosal block is the term used to describe the prevention of further iron absorption through the mucous membrane of the small intestine ( mucosa ) when there is sufficient iron in the body. The level of the transferrin level in the intestinal cell provides information about the organism's iron supply . If there is an excess of iron, it is increasingly bound to ferritin , preventing it from being released into the body on the basal side of the intestinal cell. The iron that has accumulated in the cells is finally eliminated via the normal exfoliation of the intestinal cells.
