Emmanuel Breuillard

Emmanuel Francois Breuillard (born June 25, 1977 in Poitiers ) is a French mathematician who specializes in groups and combinatorics.

Life

Breuillard studied at the École normal supérieure (ENS) in Paris, the University of Cambridge and Yale University , where he received his doctorate in 2004 under Gregori Alexandrowitsch Margulis ( Equidistribution of Random Walks on Nilpotent Lie Groups and Homogeneous Spaces ). He is a professor at the University of Paris-South .

His research areas are Lie groups and their discrete subgroups , arithmetic groups , geometry and harmonic analysis on groups, combinatorics , ergodic theory and random paths on groups.

In 2012 he received the EMS award . In the laudation, his deep-seated results in asymptotic group theory were highlighted, in particular his tightened version of the Tits alternative for linear groups and his investigation of approximate groups (literally approximated groups , a generalization of the subgroup concept in combinatorics), with a bunch of the most varied Methods that were influential in combinatorics, group theory, number theory, and beyond. He worked with Terence Tao and Ben Green , among others .

In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul ( Diophantine geometry and uniform growth of finite and infinite groups ).

In the 2015/2016 winter semester, he moved to the University of Münster . In 2017 he was elected Sadlerian Professor of Pure Mathematics at Cambridge University .
