Multiple organ failure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Multi organ failure ( MODS from English multi organ dysfunction syndrome or MOF from English multi organ failure ) refers to the simultaneous or sequential failure or severe functional impairment of various vital organ systems in the body .

The term MOV is now considered obsolete in specialist circles and has been replaced by MODS.

root cause

MODS can be the result of a number of pathological changes in the body. MODS often occurs in sepsis , in polytrauma patients or in decompensated internal diseases such as heart failure or as a result of a pronounced allergic reaction ( anaphylactic shock ).

Multiple organ failure can also occur with hereditary transaldolase deficiency.

The following organ systems can be affected:

treatment

Treatment of MODS is usually associated with admission to an intensive care unit , as this is a life-threatening condition. In intensive care medicine there are procedures to support the function of failed organs or to replace them completely (e.g. ventilation , dialysis , circulatory support through medication), but MODS is associated with a very high mortality rate .
