Multiplex bus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a multiplex basis is known in the digital technology, a bus , the individual data lines sequentially of various signals of the microprocessor can be programmed. A multiplexer (i.e. a selection module ) in the processor's system bus interface decides which signal is applied to the bus line . A multiplex bus is selected in particular when one wishes to limit the number of connecting pins in a processor housing. However, due to the need to serialize the signals, multiplex buses are relatively slow. They are used in particular in microcontrollers to save costs. Various peripheral buses can also be designed as multiplex buses. A prominent example is the PCI bus.
