Mumford Cove

Mumford Cove is a private luxury residential area in Southeast Connecticut in the immediate vicinity of Groton Long Point , Noanks Haley Farm State Park , Palmer's Cove and Fisher's Island Sound . It belongs to Groton communally . The area was opened in the 1960s and there are a number of buildings dating from that period. More luxury properties have been added in recent years. The prices range from $ 500,000 to $ 2.5 million, compared to the average price of real estate in Groton which is around $ 220,000.

Mumford Cove has sports facilities, a beach and a harbor with communal sail boats , and other facilities. Well-known residents include former Governor John N. Dempsey and Claire Gaudiani , Chairman of the New London Development Corporation and President of Connecticut College .

Mumford Cove is completely privately owned and funds road maintenance and public services through local fees. Therefore it is not allowed to enter the area. A comparable settlement nearby is Mason's Island , in Stonington .

Mumford Cove experienced ecological crises in the 1970s as untreated sewage was discharged into the bay and salt marshes. After extensive nature conservation measures, the water quality has almost returned to its original level.
