Groton Long Point

Groton Long Point (GLP) is a district of Groton on Long Island Sound in New London County , Connecticut , United States . The settlement is mostly used as a summer retreat for families and is therefore subject to strong seasonal fluctuations in population.

The area is administered by the Groton Long Point Association (GLPA), which was established by decree of the Connecticut Legislature in 1921 . The decree gave seasonally changing residents the opportunity to levy taxes and fees independently of the municipality of Groton. Usually these were services that the municipalities did not want or could not provide. The corporation was not registered as a borough , but has the same sovereign powers.

Groton Long Point is located on a peninsula between Mumford Cove and Long Island Sound. On the south side, parallel to the coast, the Groton Long Point Harbor runs from west to east . According to the United States Census Bureau , the area is 0.4 sqmi (1.03 km²), with much land and 0.04 sqmi (10 hectares) of water in the Mumford Cove area. North of Groton Long Point is the Haley Farm State Park .

In summer, Groton Long Point is bustling with life, because during this time almost all buildings are inhabited or rented out to holidaymakers by the owners. As a yacht club , the Groton Long Point Yacht Club is special because it offers many summer camps and sailing courses for young people. Concerts are often held at nearby Esker Point . From September the settlement begins to calm down because most of the summer visitors are leaving. Only a small number of residents live permanently in Groton Long Point. The closest school is Fitch Senior High School in Groton.

Groton Long Point Volunteer Fire Department

The volunteer fire brigade is an important institution. It was founded in 1951 and is manned all year round. The fire department also hosts popular social events all year round.
