Mummery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mummery is a figure of the hermit carnival . She appears together with the Johee and the Hörelibajass on Shrove Tuesday . Together these figures contest the throwing out of bread , in which loaves of bread (so-called Mütschli) are alternately thrown from different stages into the crowd. According to the vernacular, the mummery represents a horse dealer who has lost his fortune on trips to Switzerland . He wears a red, black, and yellow striped dress and a horse boulder over his shoulder. He is holding a horse tail in his hand. The mummerie wears a wig with a felt hat on his head . The face is covered by a valuable wooden mask .
