The Brotauswerfen is a custom of the hermit Fasnacht . It takes place every year on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday. Around 9,000 "Mütschli" are thrown out by a mask group, which consists of Joheen , Mummerien and Hörelibajassen . A Mütschli is a loaf of bread weighing 250 grams, with which a total of over two tons of bread are ejected.

For this purpose, three stages will be created in three different places in the village. Before being thrown, the mask group makes their way through the crowd to the stage. As soon as everyone has taken their position, the ejection begins. Of course, the guests always try to catch a "Mütschli" directly.

Many locals agree that throwing bread is the most beautiful carnival custom in Einsiedeln. So it is not surprising that there is a huge crowd around the stages and that many visitors from outside travel to Einsiedeln especially for this occasion. The custom has been carried out by the Einsiedeln gymnastics club since 1903 , which at that time received the cloakroom from the Pfauenwirt Karl Gyr-Kälin. According to Martin Gyr, however, the custom can be traced back to the 17th century . The aim was to give alms, as there was great poverty at that time.
