There are very few professional harmonica players, at least full-time professionals. The prehistory of blues , jazz and gospel was one of the first important harmonica players to include the blues singer and harmonica player Sonny Terry . Playing the Richter diatonic harmonica he played , nowadays usually referred to as the blues harp , has been perfected to this day by virtuosos like jazz musician Howard Levy , who developed a playing technique on the basis of which the diatonic instrument can be played fully chromatically. However, by then the blues harp players had already developed a large part of the twelve-tone tone scale by so-called bending of notes. One of the first world-renowned virtuoso of the classic chromatic harmonica was Larry Adler .

Special ensemble harmonicas for bass and chord accompaniment enable pure harmonica ensembles. They became popular during the recording ban , from which harmonica players were excluded. As an exception, professional ensembles were also able to establish themselves for a while. In 1947 the trio Harmonicats of Jerry Murad , Al Fiore and Don Les even landed an 8-week No.1 hit in the US charts with the title Peg o 'My Heart .
