Mundilfari (mythology)

Mundilfari , also Mundilfare or Mundilföri, is a giant figure from Nordic mythology . In the songs of the north he is considered to be the mover of the world axis , father of the sun and moon and also embodies the night .

Mundilfari, north., Means "who moves according to certain times".

Mundilfari was a giant who lived in Midgard . Because he named his pretty children, Sôl and Mani , both also giants, after the sun and moon, the gods (Assir) became angry at this presumption. As a punishment, the children were forced to drive the divine chariots through heaven.

Therefore the two move across the sky as the sun and moon every day. Mani, also a giant, drives in the moon chariot , with Bil and Hjuki accompanying him. The giantess Sol drives in the sun chariot , pulled by the stallions Alswinn and Arwakr .
