The Municipal Buildings Greenock house the municipal government of the Scottish town of Greenock in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

description

The building is located in the city center at the end of the A8 and A78 across from Wellpark Mid Kirk . It takes up a large part of the square. Construction began in 1881 and completed in 1886. Stylistically, motifs from Mediterranean architecture and Scottish Renaissance architecture were incorporated into the design. The approximately 75 m high Victoria Tower , which ends with a dome and was last completed, is striking . The building is richly ornamented both outside and inside with granite pillars, sculptures and atlases . In the south-east, at the foot of the Victoria Tower, a corner of the building is cut out from which exposed brick emerges. There used to be a shop there, the owner of which, Robert Cowan, refused to sell the property for the city council to build. For this reason, this building was quickly converted. The shop fell victim to an air raid in 1941. The recess is now called Cowan's Corner , based on the shopkeeper .
