Mid Kirk

The Wellpark Mid Kirk , former New Church or Mid Kirk is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Greenock in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

The Parish Greenock was established in the 1590s . In order to take into account the increasing number of inhabitants in the following centuries, the parish was divided several times, with a separate parish church being built in each parish. In 1741 the Parish "Middle" or "New" was created. The construction of the associated parish church began in 1759 and the building was finally completed and opened in 1761. The organ was installed in 1768. Initially, the building did not have a bell tower; one was only added in 1787. The church was renovated in 1878 and finally restored in 2000. In the course of an air raid during World War II , the Mid Kirk was damaged and the leaded glass windows shattered. New windows were financed from compensation payments in 1951. Douglas Hamilton provided the design . In 1996 the parishes of Mid Kirk and Wellpark West were merged to form Wellpark Mid Kirk .
