Hybrid of
Citrus tangerina × Sweet apfelsine (Sweet Orange)

Murcott (traded as honey mandarin ) is a hybrid cultivation of citrus tangerina and sweet orange .

Murcott comes in all probability from an experimental cultivation of the United States Department of Agriculture around the year 1916. The variety is named after Charles Murcott Smith, who grew it from 1922 in Bayview (Pinellas County, Florida) .

Variety description

The tree of the Murcott variety grows very straight up and forms branches that are often bent at the ends due to strong fruiting and break easily.

Murcott is a medium-diameter citrus fruit ( hesperidium ) around 7.5 cm (2½ to 3 " ) with an average of between twelve and 24 pips. Its peel is reddish-orange in color, which can be lighter in milder winters The “ pulp ” is intense orange and peeling is a little more difficult compared to other citrus fruits.

It is largely grown in Florida . The fruits ripen between January and March. Murcott can be attacked by citrus scab ( Elsinoe fawcettii ) and Alternaria citri .
