Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany (also Murdac ; * 1362 ; † May 24, 1425 on Castle Hill, Stirling ), was a Scottish nobleman and Guardian of Scotland .

Murdoch was a son of Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany , and his first wife Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith. He was captured by the English at the Battle of Homildon Hill in 1402, from which he was finally released in 1415 in exchange for the Earl of Northumberland. From 1420 to 1424, Murdoch was James I's regent of Scotland. With the death of his father he received the titles of Earl of Fife , Earl of Menteith and Duke of Albany .

On March 25, 1425 all his titles and estates were confiscated, and two months later he was beheaded on Castle Hill in Stirling.

Murdoch had been married since 1391 to Isabel, daughter of Duncan, 8th Earl of Lennox , who had given birth to four sons. The eldest, Robert, had died in 1421, Walter and Alexander were executed together with their father in 1425, and the youngest, James “the Gross”, left numerous illegitimate descendants. The descendants of the latter include the families Stuart of Ochiltree, Stewart of Ardvohrlich, Stewart of Glenbuckey, Stuart of Inchbreck and Laithers as well as the Lords of Avondale, which also includes Henry Lord Methven, the third husband of Margaret Tudor .

Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, is buried in the Church of the Black Friars in Stirling.
