The Murray Islands are a group of small islands in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . They are 1.9 km southeast of Cape Whitson off the south coast of Laurie Island .
The British Antarctic explorer Matthew Brisbane (1787–1833), who had explored the south coast under the leadership of James Weddell , mapped it in January 1823. Weddell named it after the watchmaker James Murray (1780–1847), the maker of chronometers for the sea voyage .
