Murraylink

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Murraylink is an underground, bipolar, high-voltage direct current line in Australia that connects the small town of Berri in the state of South Australia with Red Cliffs in the state of Victoria . With a length of 176 kilometers (or 180 kilometers), the Murraylink - apart from HVDC submarine cables - is currently the longest underground HVDC line in the world.

The line was built by ABB on behalf of the operating company Murraylink Transmission Company Pty Ltd (MTC) and went into operation in 2002. The two cables were generally laid along existing roads at a depth of 1.2 meters, which shortened construction time. The service life is expected to be 40 years. The total cost was A $ 180 million .

The Murraylink was built to carry electricity from the state of Victoria to the state of South Australia, as the Riverland region there suffered from a power shortage. However, it is also possible to conduct electricity in the opposite direction if this should become necessary.

Technical specifications

The HVDC consists of two cables with a maximum transmission capacity of 220  megawatts ; the current is 739  amps and the voltage is ± 150  kilovolts . In Berri there is a connection to a 132-kilovolt line, in Red Cliffs to a 220-kilovolt line. The VSC converter technology (voltage sourced converter) is used (ABB calls this HVDC Light).

owner

At the time of establishment, MTC was each 50% owned by SNC Lavalin (through the subsidiary SNC-Lavalin Investment Australia Pty Ltd ) and Hydro-Québec (through the subsidiary Murraylink HQI Australia Pty Limited ). On March 30, 2006, Australian Pipeline Trust acquired MTC for A $ 153 million.

As of 2012, MTC is 100% owned by Energy Infrastructure Investments Pty Ltd (EII). EII, in turn, is owned by a consortium made up of Dalmeny Gas & Power Holdings BV (24.95%), Midstream Investment First BV (24.95%), Osaka Gas Energy Europe BV (30.20%) and Australian Pipeline Limited (19.90%) exists.
