The Murturm

The Murturm is a lookout point in the southeast of the Styrian town of Gosdorf (municipality of Mureck ) an der Mur (border area with Slovenia) within the European Green Belt .

The total height is 27.5 meters. The diameter is 8.7 meters. The number of steps up to the highest accessible point is 168.Built between March and September 2009, opened on March 10, 2010, the Murturm represents a touristic part of the former community of Gosdorf.

The construction is reminiscent of a double helix ( DNA ) and is intended to "screw" the space with the path experienced. The concept and the planning were taken over by terrain: loenhart & mayr , a Munich architecture office.

Despite disagreements with nature conservationists, the construction project was carried out according to plan and, due to the fact that the tower is located in the area of the European Green Belt , co-financed by the EU .

The double spiral staircase and the viewing platform as a connection between the entrance and exit embody a similarity to the historical double spiral staircase in Graz Castle .
