history

The building was built between 1670 and 1685 and was then called Palais Gubernatis after its owner, Jean-Baptiste Gubernatis. In 1823 it became the property of Raymond Garin de Cocconato, who had it converted into a bourgeois house. 100 years later, in 1923, the Villa Garin de Cocconato was sold to a private company. In 1950 the villa was given its current name, Villa des Arènes, after the city of Nice acquired it.

The museum opened in 1963 on the first floor of the house. On the ground floor there was an archaeological museum, which moved in 1989, making it possible to expand the Musée Matisse. After four years of renovation work - a new wing was added alongside renovation work - it was reopened in 1993 and since then has offered the opportunity to exhibit the entire collection, including the new acquisitions and donations since 1963.

collection

The museum's permanent collection includes many works given to the museum by Matisse, who lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954, as well as donations from the artist's heirs and the French state. The collection includes 68 paintings and gouaches découpées , 236 drawings, 218 engravings , 57 sculptures and 14 books illustrated by Matisse, including jazz , as well as 95 photographs. It also includes 187 objects that Matisse owned, such as serigraphs, tapestries, ceramics, glass windows and documents.
