Musée du Montparnasse was located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris at 21 avenue du Maine. It was dedicated to the art of the first half of the 20th century, when Montparnasse was the center of the avant-garde in the visual arts.

The museum was located in Marie Vassilieff's former studio . It was inaugurated on May 28, 1998 and closed in 2015. It emerged as a non-commercial venture thanks to the efforts of journalist Roger Pic and art critic Jean-Marie Drot. It was run by the association Les amis du musée de Montparnasse .

In the second and third decades of the 20th century, Marie Vassileff's studio was a meeting place for Parisian bohemians . The painter ran the private Academy Vassilieff there . During the First World War she ran a canteen in her studio for poor artists.
