The extensor pollicis longus muscle ( Latin for "long thumb extensor") is a skeletal muscle and one of the deep extensors on the forearm . It is larger than the extensor pollicis brevis muscle , the origin of which it partially covers.

The extensor pollicis longus muscle extends the thumb to the extremity. The insertion tendon of the muscle passes through the third tendon sheath of the extensor retinaculum and forms the ulnar border of the snuffbox . When the tendon ruptures, so-called drum paralysis occurs .
