The musculus fibularis brevis ( Latin for "short fibula muscle "), also called musculus peroneus brevis according to older nomenclature , is one of the skeletal muscles of the lower leg on the fibula side . In the ungulates this muscle is not developed. From its origin at the distal lateral fibula, it runs under the outer ankle to the lateral side of the sole of the foot and attaches to the fifth metatarsal bone ( tuberositas ossis metatarsi V ). The tendon runs over the ankle joint in front of the fibularis longus muscle . In humans, both tendons are covered by a common tendon sheath. In predators , the tendon runs in a common tendon sheath with that of the extensor digitorum lateralis muscle of the hind limb.

The tasks of the musculus fibularis brevis are plantar flexion (stretching downwards) and pronation in the ankle .
