The levator anguli oris muscle ("corner of the mouth elevator") - also known as the caninus muscle - is a skin muscle of the head. The muscle originates in the canine fossa of the upper jaw and radiates into the corner of the mouth, where its muscle fibers merge with those of the zygomaticus , depressor anguli oris and orbicularis oris muscles. The muscle belongs to the mimic muscles and pulls the corner of the mouth upwards. It is innervated by the facial nerve. In horses, the muscle also dilates the nostrils .
