The retractor costae muscle ( Latin for “rib retractor ”) is a thin, flat skeletal muscle in the flank area in mammals. It is not trained in humans. It arises from the thoracolumbar fascia and extends cranioventrally to the last rib . It can be seen as a continuation of the internal intercostal muscles and narrows the rib cage. Functionally, it is one of the auxiliary muscles that support exhalation .
