The subcostal muscles ( Latin for "lower rib muscles"; singular subcostal muscles ) are a group of skeletal muscles of the wall of the thorax . They arise on the upper edge of the lower ribs between the rib cusps ( tuberculum costae ) and rib angles ( angulus costae ) and start on the back of the next but one higher rib.
Their fibers run in the same direction as the fibers of the internal intercostal muscle .

The subcostal muscles tense the ribs and have an expiratory effect.
