Tarsalis muscle
The tarsalis muscle (M. tarsalis Müller; Müller muscle) refers to a layer of smooth muscle that is embedded in the framework of the eyelids .
One differentiates:
- Musculus tarsalis superior : smooth muscles of the upper eyelid
- Inferior tarsalis muscle : smooth muscles of the lower eyelid
The innervation occurs through fibers of the sympathetic nervous system . The tarsalis muscle gathers the upper and lower eyelids together vertically, thus widening the eyelid gap .
