Lid framework and lid ligaments

The Lidgerüst ( Tarsus palpebrae , sometimes incorrectly as Lidknorpel called) is a bowl-shaped reinforcement of the eyelid , from taut collagenous connective tissue is. In humans, the framework of the upper eyelid ( superior tarsus ) and the lower eyelid ( inferior tarsus ) are about 8 to 10 mm high and are braced by the medial palpebral ligament on the nasal corner of the eye and by the lateral palpebral ligament on the temporal corner of the eye . The meibomian glands are embedded in the eyelid framework at right angles to the edge of the eyelid . In addition, the edge area contains smooth muscle cells called the tarsalis muscle . This sympathetically innervated muscle can enlarge the fissure of the eyelids by a few millimeters. The levator palpebrae superioris muscle attaches to the tarsus of the upper eyelid .
