In the Olympus museums and exhibitions, archaeological and historical as well as contemporary exhibits and works of art are exhibited in the vicinity of Mount Olympus in northern Greece .

Archaeological Museum, Dion

The archaeological finds from the excavation site of Dion and the surrounding area are exhibited there. The museum is divided into three floors. Coins, clay pots and ancient building materials can be seen in the basement. There is a small cinema on the ground floor, the exhibition mainly shows finds from the sanctuaries of Dion. The famous water organ can be seen on the upper floor ; There are also changing exhibitions of archaeological finds from the wider area.

The approximately 100 m² mosaic of the Epiphany of Dionysus can be seen in a separate building, the archaeological library . The laboratory and workshop are housed in separate buildings.

Archaeological Museum, Makrygialos

The archaeologists' offices, laboratory and workshops are located on the ground floor of the building; the museum is upstairs. At the moment (2018) only a few of the many finds from Pydna , the necropolis of Pydna , Methone and Makrygialos and the surrounding area can be seen in the museum. Some smaller, mostly clay exhibits and amphorae, some of which served as urns or sarcophagi for small children, are on display. The museum is not yet open to the public.

Alexandrion , Litochoro

The building erected by Greek Macedonians living abroad deals with the life and work of Alexander the Great . In addition to the permanent exhibition, the building also serves representative purposes.

Museum of the Agia Triada Monastery , Sparmos

The museum exhibits include icons from the 17th century, valuable vestments, old wood carvings and books written and bound by the monks of the monastery. During the liberation struggle against the Ottomans , the monks stored food and ammunition for the fighters and took care of the wounded.

Historical documents from the document that approved the construction of the monastery to photographs of a soldier of the German Wehrmacht , which show the old monastery shortly before it was destroyed, prove the past of the monastery. On display are relics set in silver , vestments, an epitaph woven with silver thread , documents, books, icons and inlaid furniture. The monastery library, which is not open to the public, is located above the museum.

Geological-historical museum of Mount Olympus , Leptokarya

Information boards and models explain the formation and geological structure of Mount Olympus. You can see fossils , the rocks occurring in the mountains and photographs of geologically significant objects. Special exhibits are fossils of marine animals that were found on Mount Olympus at an altitude of around 1000 meters.

The exhibition leads the visitor through all regions of the mountain. Starting from the Litochoro location , the animals and plants of the various altitudes are shown on display boards and explained in Greek and English. Interactive screens enable a 360 ° all-round view from different locations; a small cinema shows a 3-D film about the Olympus massif. There is also information about archaeological sites, monasteries, mythology , geology and the history of the first ascent of the peaks.

Nautical Museum , Litochoro

The Nautical Museum was founded to preserve the memory of the town's merchant shipping tradition. Most of the exhibits come from private property, some of them from shipowners or the Navy. Certificates, log books and old photographs are exhibited alongside nautical instruments and nautical utensils. A special feature is the replica of the bridge of a merchant ship with all instruments.

Mosaic Center , Dion

In the summer months there are exhibitions with changing themes as part of the Olympos Festival . The respective host country of the Olympos Festival often uses the opportunity to present its art and culture there. Occasionally, artists from Greece hold exhibitions of their work. So far, mosaics, paintings, photographs, sculptures and prints have been seen.

Pontic Museum, Katerini
