The Museo Etnografico Tiranese (MET) is an ethnographic museum in Tirano , a town in the Valtellina valley in the Lombardy region (Sondrio province). It was founded in 1973 by the Centro Iniziativa Giovanile (CIG) with the aim of researching and documenting the life and culture of the montane rural environment in Valtellina. The Centro Iniziativa Giovanile ran the museum until the end of 2017, since then the Comune of Tirano has been responsible for the continuation and development of the museum.

Museum collection

The collection of the since 1990 in the Casa del Penitenziere (dt. House of Pönitenziar ,) a palazzo from the 18th century in the immediate vicinity of the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano housed. As a result of the Valtellina flood disaster in the summer of 1987, the collection was moved to the new museum building, which was restored by the municipality of Tirano for this purpose . From a strategic point of view, the location on the Piazza della Basilica is very interesting for a historical museum, since the basilica square had been equipped with a market since 1514, which was of great national importance. In addition to the religious element of the pilgrimage basilica, the piazza was also provided with a historically important economic component.

The focus of the collection is on objects and devices that reflect the lower and traditional rural social milieu in the Valtellina. Since it was founded in 1973, the Museo Etnografico Tiranese has collected more than 14,000 objects, around 7,000 of which can be seen in the museum's exhibition rooms. The exhibition area extends over three floors and a basement room and shows a cross-section of the historical working and living environment of the Valtellina . On the ground floor there is, among other things, a workshop that is equipped with wood and iron processing equipment for a Wagner and a cooper . The first floor explains the traditional textile production from natural fibers such as hemp or linen. In addition, one room is dedicated to the religious element of the city and refers to the pilgrimage church of Madonna di Tirano. The splendid chasuble vestments that were given to the basilica by Cardinal Richelieu in 1636 should be emphasized . Probably not out of sheer generosity, but rather out of political calculation in order to strengthen the French-friendly party in the valley at the time of the Graubünden turmoil . On the second floor of the palazzo, a stüa with original wooden wall paneling was set up as a living room and bedroom, and the basic features of a kitchen were reconstructed in another room. The main piece, however, is the hall that shows the utensils used in daily farming activities, such as cheese dairy, slaughter, forest work or vine training. In particular, the cellar houses two historic wooden wine presses . A large spindle press as it was typical for the processing of the grapes in the valley, as well as a small screw press to press the must for the production of Sforzato .

In addition to the exhibition collection, there is also a collection of photos and postcards, a phone library, a film library, a graphics collection and an archive of historical documents in the museum's holdings. The collection of historical photos and postcards now comprises more than 4,000 items and, together with a collection of historical prints, offers outstanding material to be able to trace the changes in the cultural and settlement landscape of the Valtellina.

The Centro Provinciale di documentazione sull'emigrazione , which was founded to research the Italian emigration movement with a focus on the province of Sondrio, has also been assigned to the museum since 1993 . As part of this activity, a number of publications have already been published, especially on the issue of Veltliner emigrants in Australia. There is therefore also an archive with more than 1,600 letters (copies and originals) from Australia in the holdings.
