The museum is located at Plaza del Potro Nº 1 in the historic building of the former Hospital de la Caridad and houses the important collection of the works of Julio Romero de Torres , who was born in Cordoba in 1874 and lived and worked there until his death in 1930. The museum building has been entered in the cultural monument category on the Bien de Interés Cultural list since 1962 .
After the death of Julio Romero de Torres on May 10, 1930, the artist's widow Francisca Pellicer and the children Rafael, Amalia and María decreed that all works would become the property of the Spanish state on the condition that a museum be set up, which is freely and freely accessible to the public.
On November 23, 1931, the museum was inaugurated by the President of the Segunda República Española Niceto Alcalá Zamora . In 1992 the museum was provided with new light installations and security systems.
In June 2005 the museum closed its doors for a total renovation, which also included a thorough renovation to preserve the building. The museum reopened on January 24, 2012.
