The Museo d'arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (abbreviation: MART, German: Museum for modern and contemporary art of Trento and Rovereto ) is an art museum opened in 2002 in the Italian Trentino at the locations Trento and Rovereto. It is architecturally significant and, in addition to the most important collection of futuristic art in Italy, also houses a relevant research facility.

history

Rovereto is a small town in northern Italy with 36,000 inhabitants and is located in the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol (Alto Adige). Cultural accents were set up to the beginning of the 20th century with Mozart's first concert in Italy (1769), a stay with Goethe (1784), the construction of a huge theater (1784) and the foundation of the " Accademia degli Agiati ". In 1919, Fortunato Depero, one of the most important exponents of futurism, moved to the city and set up a futuristic art house that was engaged in the production of futuristic tapestries, furniture and curtains. A year before his death († 1960) he adapted his house as a museum. Through his legacy, the city of Rovereto came into possession of the bulk of his artistic estate, which today includes over 3000 works, ranging from paintings to theater posters and sculptures. Since the available space ("Casa Museo Depero" - House of Depero) was not sufficient for an appropriate presentation, the city of Rovereto, but especially the curator of this museum Gabriella Belli, had been trying since the 1980s to build a new museum that was not only dedicated to Depero's art , but also that of other futurists and contemporary art in general as a home and research facility. This project was impressively realized with the MART. The provincial administration acted as the builder and key financer.

Building history, architecture

The architect Mario Botta from Ticino was entrusted with the planning in 1987. Although he had 29,000 square meters available, he was faced with the problem of having to build the building on the historic Via Bettini behind two palazzi from the 18th century. He solved the problem under the motto “space for art, not space in spite of art” with a “ pantheon without a facade”, whereby the three-story museum rooms are arranged on the edge of a mighty circular agora, which is 25 meters high by a glass dome with 40 Meters in diameter. This agora can accommodate events with up to 1200 visitors.

The museum space is 12,000 square meters, half of which is used as exhibition space, while the rest is reserved for research (Futurism, Novecento ), a library, the museum shop and a cafeteria. The construction time was 5 years, the total costs amounted to 50 million euros.

meaning

As early as 1987, the MART in Rovereto was supplemented by two more museums: by the MART in Trento, which shows some exhibits from the 19th century, and by the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero, which is also located in Rovereto. This makes the above-mentioned Fortunato Depero its only theme: This only Italian museum that deals exclusively with Futurism shows the artist's vision reflected in furniture, tapestries and even toys in an impressive way. It was Department 20. Century of the Trentino Provincial Museum, which was housed in the historical “Palazzo delle Albere” in Trento , as well as the house of Fortunato Depero, which is exclusively concerned with Futurism, shows the artist's vision reflected in furniture, tapestries and even toys in an impressive way. It is a prestige project in Trentino and has been the most important new museum building in Italy for several decades. As a futuristic exhibition and research facility, the MART is significant beyond the borders of Italy.
