The museum aims to provide space for discovery, for critical thinking and for an international dialogue at the interface between the disciplines of contemporary art , architecture and technology . In this sense, national and international exhibitions on contemporary artists, architects and thinkers are shown for all target and age groups. In particular, the exhibitions are equipped with exhibits from the art collection of the Foundation Fundação EDP, which specializes in modern Portuguese art.

Origin and architecture

The developer of the project and owner of the MAAT is the Foundation Fundação EDP, which belongs to the formerly state-owned Portuguese group of companies Energias de Portugal , SA. The building, designed by British architect Amanda Levete , was completed in March 2017, but provisionally opened on October 5, 2016. The curved, elongated, oval facade consists of 14936 bright, partly three-dimensional tiles, which are supposed to react to the constantly changing glittering light on the water. Under the enormous overhang, made possible by a steel construction, is the column-free central room, the »Galeria oval«.

The exterior of the iconic building refers to the history of the country - the undulating structure at the mouth of the Tajo is reminiscent of seafaring - it enables - via the accessible roof - impressive city views and, conversely, also aims to direct the view of the city. The project comprises around 3,000 square meters of exhibition space and 7,000 square meters of public space. With the museum building, which cost 20 million euros, the EDP Foundation not least combines the goal of bringing the historic Belém district back into the public eye and revitalizing it.

Due to its low height of only 12 m, the MAAT fits into the backdrop of the Belém district without hiding its historical buildings. In addition, the modern building was connected to the neighboring, former Central Tejo steam power station - now a popular electricity museum - through a landscape project designed by the Lebanese architect Vladimir Djurovic.

Exhibition activity

In October 2016, the MAAT opened with an installation by the French conceptual artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster , and the main exhibition “The Form of Form” at the Lisbon Architecture Triennial 2016 was also on view at the MAAT.

The museum director is Pedro Gadanho, a former architecture curator at the Museum of Modern Art . Inês Grosso is the curator.
