The Franz Gertsch Museum was opened in Burgdorf , Switzerland in autumn 2002 . It is financed from private funds and houses works by the Willy Michel Foundation. The permanent collection with works by Franz Gertsch is regularly supplemented by special exhibitions.

Architecture

In close collaboration with Franz Gertsch, the Swiss architects Hansueli Jörg and Martin Sturm designed exhibition spaces that were tailored to the works on display after an urban planning competition. The museum building, completed in 2002, is divided into two exposed concrete cubes which are at right angles to each other and enclose a museum garden. The exhibition area of a total of almost 1000 m² is divided into five clearly proportioned rooms with extremely reduced materials, which are entirely at the service of the works. In addition to the exhibition rooms, an artcafé and a video lounge with a documentation about Franz Gertsch are also available to visitors.

The collection

In 1998 the Burgdorf industrialist Willy Michel, together with Franz Gertsch, made the decision to build and set up a jointly supported museum. Michel ensured the financing of the entire project and founded the willy michel foundation named after him, which forms the basis of the collection. In its completeness, the collection offers a constellation that is probably unique for an artist of high standing: It completely encompasses the complete works of Franz Gertsch since 1987. Specifically, these are the paintings Silvia I and Grasses I – IV as well as numerous woodcuts, including one several large-format triptychs. In addition, the museum supplements its own holdings with loans from other museums or private lenders and tries to acquire additional works for the collection.

Temporary exhibitions

In addition to the work of Franz Gertsch, the museum also regularly shows temporary exhibitions that present a wide range of contemporary art. Gertsch's companions as well as comparable more recent positions, but also opposing approaches to reality are the exhibition themes. The interface between painting and photography is another focus.
