William "Willy" Michel (* 29. April 1947 in Burgdorf , Canton of Bern ; heimatberechtigt in Köniz and Burgdorf) is a Swiss entrepreneur of medical devices .

Life

Willy Michel spent his childhood in Burgdorf as the son of a rail shunting master. He was a chemical laboratory assistant at Ciba-Geigy in Basel. He then gained extensive experience in the areas of development, field service and marketing at several industrial and pharmaceutical companies. From 1978 to 1984 he was head of Novo Nordisk Switzerland.

In 1984 he founded Disetronic AG together with his brother Peter Michel . He went public in 1996 , after which he sold part of it to Roche in 2003 . At the same time, he bought back the injection systems division and founded today's Ypsomed from it, which he then went public in 2004. From the very beginning, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Disetronic Group and today of the Ypsomed Group. From August 2011 to June 2014 he was also Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ypsomed. In July 2014 his son Simon took over the management, Willy Michel remained Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Michel is the owner of several companies, including companies in the art sector, in the watch industry (Armin Strom) and in gastronomy. Until June 2016, Michel was indirectly the main shareholder of the biotech company Finox , which he founded in 2007 and which was sold to the Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter , through the holding company BV Holding, which he controls . He owns several hotels, including the town house in Burgdorfer Oberstadt. He is Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of BV Holding AG, its Chairman from 2001 to March 2008. He is also a member of various boards of directors.

From 1998 to 2001 he was a liberal non-party member of the Burgdorf municipal council and was responsible for the police and traffic department. He is also known for his patronage . So he founded the artist Franz Gertsch , the Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf or committed to his foundation Willy Michel. In 2000 Michel bought the Gümligen Castle in Muri near Bern and renovated it. Michel lives in the castle. He has a daughter and two sons.

The business magazine Bilanz estimated Michel's fortune in 2012 at CHF 750 million.
