Finox Biotech was founded in 2007 by Willy Michel , who was indirectly the main shareholder through the holding company BV Holding, which he controls, until June 2016. In June 2016, the Hungarian pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter acquired one hundred percent of the Swiss Finox Holding AG along with all of its investments (Finox AG and all foreign companies).

Bemfola contains the biotechnologically produced active ingredient follitropin alfa, also known as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) . This hormone is used as a drug in the treatment of involuntary childlessness due to infertility to stimulate the female egg cells . As a biosimilar (successor product of a biopharmaceutical whose patent protection has expired), Bemfola corresponds to a biological medicinal product that has already been approved in the EU.
