The Museum Riegel is a museum in the municipality of Riegel am Kaiserstuhl . Opened in 2006 as an archaeological museum under the direction of Christian Dreier, after spatial changes the museum was expanded to include a second department - aerospace technology - and reopened in January 2012. In 2006 the community and the history association, which looks after the museum on a voluntary basis and is the sponsor of the museum, received the Baden-Württemberg Archeology Prize .

Dept. I - Provincial Roman Archeology

The topic is everyday life in the ancient bar about 2000 years ago. A terra sigillata drinking vessel on which a mythical mixed creature from Greek mythology is depicted - the hippocampus - is one of the highlights of the exhibition. This was discovered during an excavation on the Fronhofbuck in 2000 and is now the landmark of the museum. There is also a stamp of the ophthalmologist Lucius Virius Carpus, on which a prescription for an eye ointment is engraved. In addition to these exhibits, a model of the basilica , a Roman administrative seat, can also be seen, which can also be immersed interactively.

Another focus is a showcase on the Mithras cult . Cult vessels and objects such as those found in the Riegeler Mithraeum are exhibited here. Among other things, both a replica of the sacrificial stone and the cult sword can be seen here. The latter was probably used in ritual acts.

Dept. II - Aerospace Technology

In 2012 the museum was expanded to include this second section. After the Second World War, the French side was also able to win over various specialists for their research into rocket technology. These were first housed with their families in the Emmendingen district between 1946 and 1949 before they moved to the LRBA in Vernon. This exhibition deals with the careers of these specialists and their developments, which ultimately led to the European Ariane program.

Among other things, a Rolls-Royce Avon jet engine will be shown.
