Stammheim Museum
The Museum Stammheim (also Museum for Military and Contemporary History ) is a military history museum in Stammheim am Main in the district of Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia . It describes itself as the largest private museum in Germany for military and contemporary history .
History of the museum
The history of the museum began on October 23, 1994, when a small group of model makers, historians, collectors and classic car enthusiasts decided to found an association for the common area of interest contemporary history with a focus on military technology, which shortly afterwards became the Verein Militärgeschichte Franken e. V. was.
Until 1997, the association's activity consisted mainly of collecting and restoring old military technology. On June 21, 1997, the association held an open day for the first time and presented the collection on an area of 400 m². Motivated by the positive response from visitors, the decision was made in the same year to found a museum for military and contemporary history.
The aim was initially to focus on German military history from the 18th century to reunification in 1990. In the years that followed, the museum was expanded several times and more objects from civil and foreign history were added to the inventory. Today, over 20,000 exhibits are presented on a total area of 17,000 m², giving insights into contemporary European history with a special focus on military events and wars.
exhibition
The museum shows over 250 wheeled, tracked and air vehicles from the 19th and 20th centuries on around 17,000 square meters of exhibition space. The exhibition focuses on military technology from the two world wars and from divided Germany. In addition to German, mainly Russian and US military technology will be shown. A bunker with a trench was faithfully recreated from the First World War . In addition, contemporary civilian exhibits such as an old village blacksmith's shop, historic fire fighting equipment and a rural kitchen from the 19th century are on display.
Events
Events such as the Museum Spring or Tank Day take place regularly .
Another highlight are the Stammheim Model Days , which are held annually on the second weekend in July.
Acting as a film maker
The museum contributed to the equipment of several cinema and television productions set in the First and Second World War. The German movie Stalingrad (1993) , the TV movie Our Mothers, Our Fathers and the German-Australian production Lore were equipped with technical equipment from Stammheim. The museum contributed US tracked vehicles from the Second World War and crew to the Hollywood production The Monuments Men (2014). For a two-part ZDF documentary by the director Oliver Halmburger from Loopfilm (among other things, the maker of The Race to the South Pole ) about the First World War, the bunker system of this era was expanded on the open space of the museum and used as a backdrop.
