Museum of the Bavarian Kings
The Museum of the Bavarian Kings in Hohenschwangau near Füssen provides insights into the history of the Wittelsbach family from their beginnings to the present day.
history
The museum was opened in autumn 2011 on the 125th anniversary of Ludwig II's death .
architecture
The exhibition is located on almost 1200 square meters in the former Grand Hotel Alpenrose , which was provided by Staab Architects , Berlin, with a three-aisled steel dome construction over the former dining room. The steel dome spans the central exhibition area and two side galleries with large windows that allow a panoramic view of the two royal castles, the Alpsee and some mountains in the Alps. The builder and landlord is the Wittelsbacher compensation fund in Munich, which manages the property of the former royal family. Duke Franz von Bayern , the current head of the Wittelsbach family, is the museum's patron. The Bavarian State Association of the Association of German Architects awarded the building the BDA Prize Bavaria 2013 in the category of perfection of detail.

The focus of the exhibition are Ludwig II. And his father Maximilian II. As well as the history of the Wittelsbacher, one of the great European ruling dynasties. With around 160 original exhibits, the museum conveys a picture of the Bavarian aristocratic family from the Middle Ages to the present on almost 1200 m². The core of the museum is the Hall of the Kings, in which the owners of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein are the subject.
