The museum for carriages, chaises, carts in Heidenheim an der Brenz is a branch of the Württemberg State Museum .

Exhibits

In four sections, the museum shows around 80 vehicles and other exhibits from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, arranged according to the topics of traffic history, freight transport, luxury vehicles and agriculture.

Traffic history

The Department of Traffic History includes u. a. a historical syringe cart, information on the history of road construction and the horse as a draft animal, the railroad and the automobile. You can see vehicles from the Württembergische Post and possibly Daimler's first motorized cab from 1897 or 1898.

Load transport

The department Out and about with loads presents numerous chaise-sons , replicas of a gypsy car and special vehicles used by craftsmen. One of the most striking pieces is a beer wagon from the local Neff brewery from around 1900. Also noteworthy is a chaise owned by the Steiff company . The car was built at the end of the 19th century and in the 1920s it was probably equipped with a loading space, in whose lattice cage the parcels with stiff animals were transported to the train.

Luxury vehicles

A rich selection of children's vehicles, sleds, rarities such as a Char-à-Côté from Italy, hunting and racing vehicles can be seen in the third section.

Agricultural vehicles

Various modifications of the ladder and bridge wagons can be seen in the department for agricultural vehicles, as well as the two common variants of the shepherd's cart : until around 1900 the sheep farmer slept in a simple wagon, later the now more popular cart appeared, in which one could also stand upright . Numerous sledges are also represented in this department.

History and buildings

The museum is located in the former fruit box at Hellenstein Castle . The building was completed in 1633 and was initially used to collect peasant taxes. It was later used as accommodation for French prisoners of war, then as a military hospital and as a weaving school. The fruit box was supposed to be torn down in the middle of the 19th century, but it was saved through an initiative by Heidenheim's citizens. After the renovation, the Museum for Carriages, Chaises, Carts was opened in 1987. The exhibits come from the holdings of the Württembergisches Landesmuseum Stuttgart and the Heimat- und Altertumsverein Heidenheim. In 1989 the museum received an award from the European Museum Forum for its conception and design.

The individual departments are each housed on their own floors, only the first is accessible without stairs.

The museum is closed from mid-November to mid-March.
